Tou Tou vault is the worst vault...
Posted on Thursday, January 30 @ 06:50:54 PST by kadams

Asheron's Call 2 News I hate the Tou Tou vault in AC2. Its the worst. You are probably wondering what reminded me of this... The Falling Kingdoms site is running a poll asking people what AC2 skills people would like to have. It seems to have taken a life of its own...

..., since they allowed people to add their own poll choices. One of the poll responses was this:

"TOU TOU vault have something less than death and loss of vault for falling off. done it 6 times not once made it to the end, 4 of those six i was pushed off by some unseen bug"

Testify! I died half a dozen times as well before I gave up. Note to game designers: do NOT search through your game, find the buggiest possible feature, and then build an entire dungeon based on the use of that feature.

For those who don't know, jumping in AC2 works like this. You'll be running along outside, and reach a terrain "dropoff". This could be a cliff, or a bump in the ground: the game isn't particularly picky in this regard. The game won't let you walk over the drop off: it could be dangerous! Well, falling in AC2 isn't dangerous, but okay, the game designers want to protect us. So, to get over this "edge barrier", you have to jump. But a major percentage of the time, with some areas being almost 100%, something goes wrong. You jump, you see yourself fall, you probably even land and take a few steps in your new locale, then the bungie cord you didn't know you always wear kicks in and you bounce back to where you were.

Its called "rubber-banding", and it happens all the time. The Tou Tou vault is a series of relatively small platforms, which you have to jump between. Its sort of like uber 3D Mario Brothers. Except when you jump, about 80% of the time you bounce back.

Since the platforms are small, its very easy to bounce back and forth a couple of times in a single jump before you fall to your death, even though you squarely hit the center of the platform on your first jump. To make matters more interesting, some of the platforms have monsters on them, so you are getting attacked as you rubber band between platforms.

Its totally the most frustrating spot in the whole game for me. Its certainly possible to make it through the platforms. But there is no real skill to the jumping: its luck, and some "tricks", but has nothing to do with ballistics or geometry- when you figure out how to make it, you do so by doing totally stupid things like jumping backwards (!!).

When you die in a vault you have to hunt monsters to get another glyph (like a key) to get back in. I never finished Tou Tou. After dying about five times, I told the rest of my fellowship to carry on without me. And, since it takes ten or fifteen minutes to get another glyph each time you die, the rest of the party that had made it past the jumps was kind of getting tired of waiting.

Tou Tou vault made me too angry and frustrated to try again. That is not what the game should do.
