Server Woes caused by Virus?
Posted on Sunday, January 26 @ 22:30:26 PST by kadams

Asheron's Call 2 News Ken Troop claims that AC2's problems over the weekend were the result of the virus that hit the Internet this weekend. And he recommends not logging in...and possible rollbacks.

Here's a little excerpt from the news item:

Since we are still unable to guarantee that you will not lose items on login or character rollback and because we are considering a complete database rollback, we recommend that for now, you not log in. If you still wish to play, you may want to start up a new character. While we want to solve this problem fast, we also want to make sure we solve it right the first time.

The word is that this virus was really only impacting servers that hadn't been properly maintained...servers that didn't have the correct up to date MS SQL patches. Patches that were released something like six months ago. And here's the fun part...Ken Troop is recommending you don't play AC2 right now. Mmmm--Okay. This implies that they haven't probably haven't updated their servers and, in fact, are likely not even sure where to start. Ouch... I blathered on on Saturday about how unlikely it was that Turbine/Microsoft wouldn't be running the correct patch levels of a Microsoft product. Boy, was I wrong...

I'll admit, I'm being a bit mean towards Turbine and Microsoft.

Every large organization that has a significant base of installed Microsoft computers has a lot of work just keeping up with patches and security fixes. Its a full time job if you have 40 or 50 servers...and usually the folks doing the job are also expected to be doing other stuff, like installing new programs or restoring servers after they crash.

But it is kind of...laughable (?) that a Microsoft company got stung by a virus attacking a problem that was patched six months ago.
